Vegan Tempeh Burger

Greenletes / Recipes / Vegan Tempeh Burger

If you read the title, then you know my secret ingredient to the BEST vegan veggie burger. That’s right–it’s tempeh. I’ve tried to make a good veggie burger for years (no exaggeration). I’ve used so many different ingredients as the base, and it always either falls apart or is too dry. But I’ve finally done it! This vegan & gluten-free veggie burger stays together, is super flavorful and has plenty of protein. And it makes the perfect compliment to this Miso Slaw.

If you’re unfamiliar with this soy protein, you’re in luck. This fun video talks about my new fav ingredient and shows you how easy it is to make a delicious homemade veggie burger from scratch!

Ingredients to make a Vegan Tempeh Burger

To make this, you’ll need:

  • 8 oz tempeh
  • 2 carrots chopped
  • 1 pepper chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves peeled
  • 1/4 shallot
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sriracha
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 2 tablespoons oil, any kind

Ingredient Swaps & Substitutions

  • Smoked paprika: If you don’t have smoked paprika, you can swap with any other kind of paprika you have on hand
  • Sriracha: Sriracha adds an element of spice to this dish, so any kind of hot sauce could be used to replace it if you don’t have sriracha

How to make a Vegan Tempeh Burger

You won’t believe how easy these Vegan Tempeh Burger patties are to make! You can also make these patties ahead of time and cook them when you’re ready to eat.

Here’s how to make them:

  1. Add all the ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth.
  2. Using your hands, form four patties.
  3. Brush patties with oil and bake for 20 minutes or sautée for 5-7 minutes on each side.

Serving Suggestions

You can enjoy these vegan tempeh burger patties as a traditional plant-based burger option, but some of my other recommendations of how you can serve these vegan patties include:

  • Eat in a lettuce wrap for a low-carb option
  • Serve with a miso slaw
  • Enjoy with a variety of sides– such as sweet potato fries or a green salad
  • Top with slices of creamy avocado
  • Chop it up and serve it as part of a salad or grain bowl
