These 10 cookbooks for plant-based athletes are full of healthy and easy recipes!

Searching for a gift for the plant-based athlete in your life? Or maybe you’re a plant-based athlete and want more recipe inspiration? These cookbooks are geared toward athletes, and many of them only include vegetarian and vegan recipes.

You can’t go wrong with any of the picks on this list! But first, let me answer some questions to share a little bit about how I chose these books.

Why we chose these cookbooks

About half of the books on this list contain only vegetarian or vegan recipes. I also included some books that have meat-based recipes because they stand out for a few reasons:

  • They contain only healthy whole foods and well-balanced recipes.
  • The recipes are quick and easy to make. There are no elaborate ingredients or 2-hour cooking times.
  • The recipes include a variety of seasonal ingredients, so you can pick and choose from the books all year-round.
  • The recipes are ideal for performance. You don’t need to be a pro athlete to eat from an “athlete’s cookbook”.

1. Planted Performance by Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD (that’s me!)

Planted Performance is a labor of love. It was designed with busy plant-based athletes in mind. After working with many many plant-based athletes, I decided to write this cookbook to answer the question, “What should I eat for a workout?”

Nutrition for everyday athletes is more than just the overall consumption of the right nutrients—it’s about when and how to get what’s needed to fuel their bodies—and the growing number of plant-based athletes need answers and advice about the proper amount of nutrients. Am I getting enough protein? How much iron and B12 are in meatless foods?

Planted Performance is a cookbook for all athletes who want to eat more plants. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian or want to eat fewer animal foods, this book has you covered. It is packed with science-based nutrition tips to help you become a stronger and fitter athlete.

Planted Performance contains:

68 WELL-BALANCED RECIPES: With nutrient-rich recipes, there’s no need to count calories or track macros

SCIENCE-BASED SPORTS NUTRITION: Learn how to stay properly nourished while on a vegan or vegetarian diet to ensure you’re getting the right protein, iron, calcium, and Vitamin D

VEGAN SUBSTITUTES: Every recipe has vegan options

MEAL PREP TIPS: Learn the benefits of meal prepping and become a pro with the simple tips provided, such as focusing your meal around a protein source

4 MEAL PLANS: Each meal plan includes 6 recipes and caters to different types of workouts: training day, rest day, intense day, and strength-training day

7. Run Fast, Eat Slow by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky

World-class marathoner and 4-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan and chef Elyse Kopecky come together to show runners how to cook with healthy whole food ingredients. Neither author believes in restrictive diets or calorie counting, and each meal is well-balanced with fat, protein and carbs.

Each chapter is dedicated to satisfying different nutrition needs for runners, such as thirst quenchers, morning fuels, wholesome treats, runner’s remedies and an “Eat Like Shalane” meal plan. This book does contain some animal foods, but it’s mostly plant-based and deliciously healthy.

8. Run Fast, Cook Fast, Eat Slow by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky

A follow-up to Run Fast. Eat Slow, Olympian Shalane Flanagan and chef Elyse Kopecky are back with fast and easy recipes that don’t sacrifice flavor. Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow. is full of pre-run snacks, post-run recovery breakfasts, on-the-go lunches, and 30-minute-or-less dinner recipes.

Once again, the recipes showcase healthy whole food ingredients. And the authors include their individual experiences with the recipes. Again, there are some animal foods in the book, but it’s more plant-based than anything else.

10. The Feed Zone: Fast and Flavorful Food for Athletes Cookbook by Biju Thomas and Allen Lim

Chef Biju and Dr. Lim vetted countless meals with the world’s best endurance athletes in the most demanding test kitchens to create the recipes in this cookbook.

In an attempt to move athletes away from bland food and processed energy snacks, Thomas and Lim worked together to create The Feed Zone Cookbook, which provides 150 delicious recipes that even the busiest athletes can prepare in less time than it takes to warm up for a workout.

The book also provides science-based nutrition info for fueling for a workout. The Feed Zone is geared towards more elite athletes, but everyday athletes will still find the recipes useful.
